Betty McConkey, a federal parolee, founded Friends of
Guest House more than 35 years ago as a place for female ex-offenders
to find temporary housing and support services. Since it opened,
Friends of Guest House and its programs have served more than 1,000
women. Our board of directors and professional, dedicated staff are
committed to making a difference in women's lives.
In 1981, the house at One East Luray Avenue was
purchased with help from the City of Alexandria and the Old
Presbyterian Meeting House. The 10-bed Guest House completed a dramatic
renovation in 2004, thanks to $300,000 in donated labor, materials,
furnishings and design services.
Friends of Guest House offers assistance to women who
sincerely want to improve their lives and break the cycle of
incarceration. Services are provided without regard
to race, religion, age, national origin, marital status, sexual
orientation, or physical or mental disability. |
