After completing the Friends of Guest House Residential Program, clients move out of our residential facilities and into housing of their own. That is the point at which our Aftercare Program begins—ensuring that our clients continue to receive necessary services as they negotiate the challenges of independent living and comply with probation requirements. Aftercare lasts for nine months.
The Residential-to-Aftercare continuum lasts about one year.
Our Aftercare Specialist meets regularly with Aftercare clients, hosts monthly group meetings, and conducts job and home visits as needed. The women receive help with the many issues they confront during their transition to independent living.
At any given time, our Aftercare Program has about 40–50* clients.
Successful completion of the Residential-to-Aftercare Program continuum is marked by an annual "graduation ceremony." Graduates invite family and friends to the ceremony—which, like most graduations, features congratulatory speeches and the presentation of diplomas. In recent years, the Alexandria Grace Brethren Church has hosted the ceremonies. And every year, the Alexandria Kiwanis Club and The Nugget Jewelers give each graduate a pair of pearl earrings, symbolizing her journey.
* Aftercare is expanding! In June 2016, we added nine beds to our Residential Program, allowing that program to serve 26 women at a time. As Residential women matriculate to the Aftercare Program, Aftercare, too, is expanding—from about 40 to about 50 at any given time by 2018.
